This was my bedtime read that was a treat to look forward to. I like his writing style. Light and enjoyable. Thank you
Last night my usual six hours of sleep were reduced to three, thanks to The Splendor of Starry Nights. I just couldn't put the book down. But let me emphasize, having missed out on a few hours of sleep is the only "negative" thing I can say about this novel. I was fascinated by the insight into college professor Lester Field's life. The man became very real in my mind. Interestingly, sometimes he reminded me of Hemingway's protagonist, Jake Barnes, in The Sun Also Rises. I think many people will be able to identify with many aspects of Lester Field's struggle, but even more so - I am confident - with his somewhat unassuming acceptance that this is how his life is meant to be. Life is difficult and it is normal to struggle with both real life events and with issues created by our mind our emotional ups and downs. This quiet sense of acceptance was never spelt out in the book. It was just there, under the surface of the events you could say, and it was exactly that aspect that made me associate Lester Field with Jake Barnes. This is a thought provoking and well written novel, which I highly recommend. 5 stars from me. Reviewed by Fred Schäfer, author of The Short and Wonderful Life of Henry Hemingway.
